When it comes to studying, our wellbeing is often the last thing we think about. If you’re cramming for a test or doing big blocks of studying around your classes, you may start to feel overwhelmed by it all. The student lifestyle can take a toll on your health and wellbeing if you’re not careful enough, so here are some tips on how to maintain good wellbeing while studying.

Get your eight hours every night

Don’t underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep. It can be tempting to pull an all-nighter when a test is around the corner or sacrifice sleep for a social event but inadequate sleep can cause a multitude of health problems. If you want your brain to function at its best, try to get 8 hours of sleep a night and avoid caffeine or sugary drinks before bed. It’s also a good idea, if you can have a separate study space that isn’t in your bedroom, this will allow you a different space to study and one to rest.

Exercise regularly

Doing any form of exercise on a regular basis can not only maintain your physical health but there are many benefits to your mental health too. Something as simple as a ten-minute walk every day is enough for your body to release chemicals such as serotonin to improve your mood, lower stress levels, and keep you feeling and looking your best. From yoga tutorials to running apps, we have access to so many ways to squeeze daily exercise into our daily lives.

Eat well-balanced meals

A well-balanced diet means a healthier life and when you are studying, it’s important to fuel yourself with the right foods. If you want to be proactive, why not try batch cooking, so you can focus more time on studying and eating healthy meals throughout the week? Try your best to include your five-a-day and ditch the pot noodles and fast food takeaways.

Drink plenty of water

We are all guilty of not drinking enough water. But did you know that drinking more water increases your brain’s reaction time? Dehydration can cause multiple problems including low mood, reducing your cognitive and motor skills, and negatively impacting your memory. Drink eight glasses of water a day to reach your optimum potential while studying.

Organize your time

A routine is the best way to support your mental wellbeing during your studying time. If you are prepared and have a set schedule, then you can plan breaks in between sessions. Being organized and having good study habits will help you be productive but also give you the space to take some time away when you need it. Having plenty of rest means you will be able to work more efficiently.

Speak up if you are struggling

If you find yourself struggling or you feel worried, anxious, or stressed, talk about it with someone. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or healthcare professional, don’t suffer in silence if you feel overwhelmed or are finding the pressure of studying and exams too much. Reach out and seek the support you need.

Take breaks

It’s important to take regular breaks when you are studying. Whether you use The Pomodoro Technique or something else, allow yourself plenty of breaks between study sessions to keep your brain at its optimal performance.

Reward yourself with something you enjoy

When you have completed a task on your to-do list, completed a study session, or finished a practice exam, reward yourself with something that you enjoy. That can be anything from watching your favorite tv show to taking your dog for a walk. If you have a goal of doing something you like doing after a study session, you are more likely to complete it without distractions.
